EDLproject blog

The European Library is currently looking at ways to improve/expand its services towards partners.

We are investigating the blog as a platform to exchange experiences, a communication channel within The European Library network. Note that it is not an information feed neither an agenda as both are taken care of in the separate EDLproject website.

This forum is specifically dedicated to EDLproject partners and their Full Participant partnership.

  • We are inviting late Full Participants (TEL-ME-MOR partners) to voice their experience, advices or perhaps comment their European Library collaboration during their Basic to Full Participant shift.

  • We are also inviting EDLproject partners to communicate their expectations or concerns, and to provide a brief overview of their library collections and user profile.

  • Your feedback is essential to us. We kindly invite you to provide your views and strong opinions on the EDLproject by clicking on “Comments”. Then follow the instructions on the following pop-up screen:
    1. "Leave your comment" in the corresponding box
    2. Click on "Other"
    3. Enter your Name and Library/Organization name
    4. Enter the coloured letters into the "Word verification" box
    5. Preview then publish your comment.

I would like to see this blog used by EDL partners to discuss The European Library Office requirements and processes and to suggest ways of improving them.

Suggestions, comments, considerations, ideas and suggestions as viewed
by Philip, Margaret, Shirley and Anselm, staff members of the National Library of Malta who were entrusted to
work on the TEL-ME-MOR project and who in my opinion have gained considerable experience.

It was felt necessary that the four members of our staff namely Philip Borg, Director Libraries; Anselm Sciberras, Library Officer; Shirley Dalli, Executive Officer and Margaret Muscat, Senior Clerk, who were detailed to work on the Tel-Me-Mor project, as from day one meet together and each employee was assigned specific work as his/her duty. Moreover, each member was instructed to also get accustomed to the type of work being carried out by the other three workers. It was found fruithful that every Friday afternoon we meet together and discuss progress made re Tel-Me-More issues carried out during that particular week. Through my experience this method of work as described above helps a lot in the smooth running of a project. Especially when an employer was reported sick or was on vacation leave work could continue as usual.

With regards to the National Library of Malta the Tel-Me-Mor project was the first project in which the Library was directly involved. It could have helped a lot if prior to the commencement of work more details of the project and relative information were passed to the National Libraries concerned to get accustomed with the project.

Working with other partners was a good opportunity for us. We learned a lot from each other.

Also, through directly participating in seminars and conferences in different
countries we managed to get involved in all issues and had first hand experience on matters related to the project.

An important idea put forward by the organizers and which was very much welcomed by the library staff working on the project was the distribution of various work through the different Work Packages. This method was found very useful to us in the organization of our work.

We tried to instil awareness of the TEL-ME-MOR project in most users frequenting our National Library. We have been promoting the project by distributing leaflets handed over to us on TEL-ME-MOR. This exercise was left to our Reception Desk personnel. However, the project organizers furnished our National Library with a one type of brochures only. If different type of leaflets and brochures were made available, surely more interest would have been generated in the project.

We compiled information in the form of a short report outlining the main aspects of Tel-Me-Mor and mailed same to the National Library users. In so doing and from feedback received more library clients came to know about Tel-Me-Mor.

From the 14th to 19th November 2006 the National Library of Malta organized the 22nd yearly edition of the Malta Book Fair. We mounted a big stand giving information about the project and displayed large mounted photographs. This Book Fair event was attended by approximately 16,000 visitors. Trained library staff were entrusted with passing all information on Tel-Me-Mor and answering questions to visitors attending the Fair.

We are confident that because of the display stand and publicity we gave Tel-Me-Mor during the days of the Malta Book Fair, the project left big impact on many persons in general.

A Questionnaire on Tel-Me-Mor was prepared and distributed to library users. The answers given were analysed and we are now formulating a one report on its findings.

The Tel-Me-Mor project was updated periodically on our Library web-site.

The Tel-Me-Mor project was instrumental to provide interest in other EU activities, research programmes and project proposed calls. For example in the last five months special interest focused on Digitisation and Online Accessibility of Cultural Material and Digital Preservation.

The Tel-Me-Mor project has increased considerably public awareness on EU activities and programmes.

In my opinion Tel-Me-Mor organizers were very much limited in publicizing the Tel-Me-Mor project to the general public. The only publicizing material available to be distributed to the public was only one type of leaflets and posters. Maybe, the organization lacked qualified marketing personnel (if there was anybody) to publicise the project to as many persons as possible. Even with some little effort, for example distributing pens, key-chains, note-books, etc with Tel-Me-Mor emblem displayed on such items, more people could have accepted and enquired about the project. Or the organizers could have also given ideas to the ten New Member States how to publicise Tel-Me-Mor using the funds already available to the National Libraries.

The four staff working on the project had prepared some information on Tel-Me-Mor in the Maltese language which was also translated into English. The material was mailed to the many researchers visiting the National Library, both Maltese citizens and foreigners.

The interest shown in the project by most library visitors was so encouraging that they suggested to be kept posted of any future new information on Tel-Me-Mor. Staff personnel working on the project has also suggested that organizers of Tel-Me-Mor at the Netherlands, after the end of the project, keep all new Member States updated on any relative information regarding Tel-Me-Mor.
